The government of India has recently cleared a proposal for setting up a Diaspora university in India managed by People of Indian origin and Non resident Indians to teach technical skills for those Indians who are not able to afford the technical education in their adopted motherlands.
IGNCA wishes to initiate a discussion on what should be the character and orientation of the new Diaspora University which will ba managed by Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs under University Grant Commission of India.

Romani Exhibition at IGNCA

International Romani study center, pioneering institute in India for the study of people of Roma or Gypsy origin and their ancestral relation to India have agreed to share their precious resources stored at Chandigarh office with IGNCA for building an exhibition on Roma history. The Romani institute was founded by great scholar late Padmashree Weer Rishi. After the great shcolar's demise in 2004 the library, publications, films and precious resources on Romani studies were lying in dormant state until his son Mr.Rishi who is settled in London has started taking initiatives to resurrect it by organsing Roman Nation Day celebrations in April 2007 at Chandigarh. IGNCA Diaspora scholar Dr.V.Bangroo participated in the two day celebrations .( pl. check back for report )

In meeting at New Delhi on last Wednesday 18 April 2007, Mr.Rish has agreed to share all the collections at Chandigarh office to IGNCA Member secretary Dr.K.K.Chakravarty. IGNCA scholar Dr.V.Bangroo will soon be visiting the romani center at chandigarh to initiate the cataloguing, scanning and archiving of material. The dates for the exhibition will be announced soon . Ms.Nalini Mohabir is starting her ancestral search in Uttarpradesh

Young Canadian research scholar of Indo Guyanese origin Ms.Nalini Mohabir is begining her two month long search in Uttarpradesh for tracing peolple who returned to India in 1995 by the last repatriation ship from British Guyana . Nalini came to India in Janaury this year already done extensive research in New Delhi and Kolkata. According to her several of the migrants who have returned to Kolkata in the last ship immediately returned back witnessing horros of post partition Kolkata. many disappeared and few killed themselves.
